Hello LWA Seekers of Greater Well-BEing!

Dr. Sulak here.  This NOVEMBER newsletter is all about a topic we would like to avoid:  CANCER.  It’s familiar to all of us – personally or among our family and friends.  What are some of the FACTS?

Cancer Facts:

  • While cardiovascular disease (heart attacks and strokes) is by far the #1 killer of Americans, cancer is #2.
  • As we age, our risk increases with 80% of all cancers occurring at age 55 or greater.
  • The American Cancer Society (ACS) estimates 1.9 million new cases of cancer diagnoses in the U.S. in 2022 (NOT including skin cancer) with over 600,000 deaths.
  • In the U.S., approximately 39 to 40 out of every 100 women and men will develop cancer in their lifetime.

BUT, it’s not all doom and gloom.  Much has been accomplished in the areas of prevention, early diagnosis, and treatments.  The ACS has stated that over 40% of cancer diagnoses and almost half of cancer deaths are PREVENTABLE.  This is exciting!

Evidence continues to support the role of our lifestyle in helping us prevent cancer occurrence and recurrence.  Factors such as the type (very important!) and amount of food we eat, amounts and levels of physical activity, body composition, alcohol consumption, certain vaccines, and much more can increase or decrease our odds of cancer acquisition.

What we do day in and day out matters.  While there is no bulletproof strategy, the data on what substantially increases our risks and importantly, what can lower our odds of developing cancer is becoming clearer.  At the request of BSWH Health Plan, I reviewed the available information on cancer prevention for a recent presentation.  The facts helped Dr. Waxman and me Up Our Game in disease prevention, including cancer.  And, we are loving it.  Living WELL Aware is NOT painful.  Not Living WELL Aware IS.

To the many LWA 2022 Series TWO webinar participants, get ready for a comprehensive review of Cancer Prevention Tuesday November 1st at 6:30pm on Zoom.  We will detail the 8 strategies to lower cancer risk and also review the 30 harmful habits listed in the LWA workbook – many of which can increase our risks of cancer, cardiovascular disease, and many other health issues.

NOTICE!    Because of numerous requests, registration for LWA 2022 Series TWO Webinars is still open.  Registrations keep coming in!  It’s not too late to join in on this life-changing series which will continue weekly for the remainder of the year.
